This collection contains twenty-five photographs of the Montgomery Ala. Greys, 1885-1903. Shown are officers W.H. Amerine, Joseph Saffold, Charles P. Jones, two unidentified company members, the interior of the Greys' headquarters in Montgomery, and fifteen photographs of the Greys at the intra-state military drill competition held at Fairmont Park, Pa., in 1885. Two oversized materials are included in the collection. A 1903 photograph shows the prize drill team in the Montgomery armory. A large mat board, approximately three by four feet, contains fourteen photographs of the Greys at Fairmont Park, Pa. The prints on the board show a rally by the company, the mess tent, the prize tent, a column of platoons, charge bayonets, a column of fours, and officers. The other photographs in the collection of the Greys at the Fairmont Park drill show the company drilling, encamped, and posing. Also included is a program for the Grey's Thirty-Second Annual Ball in 1920. These photographs document the activities, uniforms, headquarters, and equipment of a late nineteenth century Ala. state guard company.
